Cash Creek Campground, Tate's Hell State Forest, Eastpoint, Florida

We tried to get a campsite at St. George's Island State Park to be close to the Bay County Audubon Society birdwatching trip but they were all booked. We drove less than 3 hours to get to Cash Creek Campground in Tate's Hell State Forest. Pam and Bob were already set up in their tent next to our site. There had been a controlled burn and most of the forest was blackened and looked like it had gotten out of control. The campsites had new power and water hookups and the restrooms were new and clean. We enjoyed cooking a new pork stew in the instant pot for dinner.

The temperature got quite chilly that night and in the morning as we headed into Eastpoint for breakfast at El Jalisco Eastpoint Restaurant. It was quite tasty and we were early as we drove across the bridge to St. George's Island so we drove the distance to the point and stopped at the beach park. We drove through the campground and saw empty sites before continuing on to the youth campground and meeting up with the group. We did not have to walk far to spot Indigo buntings and scarlet and summer tanagers all bright colored birds and easy to see in the brush. We ended the tour with our picnic lunches by the water and spotted more shorebirds. It was a beautiful sunny day and a great birding hotspot. We went back to the campground and walked down to the boat ramp to the trailhead and walked the 3 mile blue loop through the mostly burned forest. We did another new Mexican chicken stew recipe in the crockpot. We loaned Pam and Bob our polar fleece sleeping bags for the second night but it was another chilly night. The next morning Glenn cooked his famous corned beef hash and eggs outside on the picnic table but we ate inside Cutie where it was nice and warm and cozy. We packed up and headed home after a wonderful time.
