Fort Payne, Alabama to Wise, Virginia

We got underway at first light and passed startled deer as we left the ridge top and headed down the mountain. We had a great scenic four lane road through Virginia to Wise. We called our Harvest Host at Mountain Rose Winery to confirm our route as some reviewers had found it treacherous in big rigs.  It was a narrow paved road and we were greeted at the gift shop and tasting room and directed to park under the maple tree overlooking the patio and lake. The vineyards are on reclaimed mine land and named with mining terms. We were served wine flights on the patio with cheese and crackers and sampled 2 whites and 2 reds and a sparkling white. We chose three bottles to purchase and enjoyed a red wine with a cheese and meat platter while chatting with the owner. We were the only guests so we were free to roam the vineyard filled also with apple and peach trees and rose bushes. At sunset, we joined the parents of the winemaker who took their golf cart to the top of the vineyard for the best view. We enjoyed a cool, quiet night with a full moon.
