We stayed in Las Cruces because when we read the fine print on our campsite in Guadalupe National Forest, we had to change plans to the eight foot high clearance for the RV site. So we ended up driving to Davis Mountain State Park and had a great campsite with a nice shelter. We thought about heading up the mountain to the McDonald Observatory but it was late in the afternoon on a holiday weekend and wanted to avoid the crowds. Instead we stopped in at the Wildlife Viewing Center near our campsite and took the ranger's suggestion to take the CCC trail and access trail to the Skyline Trail at the top. It was a great view and a nice hike before dinner at the campsite.
