De Soto State Park, Fort Payne, Alabama

Because of the heat wave, we canceled our Harvest Host reservation at Back Forty Brewing Company in Gadsden since we would be boondocking without air conditioning in 92-degree heat in their loading dock parking lot. Instead, we reserved a shady spot at De Soto State Park in Fort Payne, Alabama. Glenn had a planned stop halfway at a park but we discovered River Java Cafe in Wetumpka where we got a chocolate milk shake made on a 1950's blender, We got into the state park the early afternoon and set up our lawn chairs in the shade with a beer and a bowl of pistachio nuts and chilled out with an electric fan blowing on us. We started our three-course meal with french fries in the air fryer, followed by baked beans straight out of the can while waiting for the mojo chicken wings to cook on the grill. After our tasty dinner, we hiked to the lodge following a path through the woods past the cabins. Luckily we were not counting on a scrumptious meal at the lodge restaurant as it looked like the buffet was it. The next morning we parked at the Country Store and hiked the Boardwalk trail and then headed north.
