Vernal, Utah to Ouray, Colorado

We got up at dawn to head back down the mountain seeing deer along the way. By the time we crossed into Colorado, we knew we were not going to make it to our reserved site in the mountains so we stopped at the Visitor Center in Montrose, Colorado. The guy there directed us south of Ouray to dispersed camping at Ironton, a ghost mining town. The drive took us along the San Juan skyway through the mountain passes for some unbelievable views of the mountains and old mining sites. The temperature when we got up in the morning was a chilly 46 degrees.

Landscape along Utah

Barren mountains

Impressive rock formations as the temperature reached 107 degrees

Turned green as we entered Colorado

Our dispersed campsite in Ironton

Our happy hour along the stream behind the campsite

Retrieving cold creek water to chill the wine

Our creekside perch

Hiked to the old mine

Remnants of silver mining

The alpine trails in summer for hiking and off-road vehicles

Stream stained by iron

Skree moved down the mountain and behind the campsite
