Black's Smugglers Winery, Harvest Host, Bosque, New Mexico

We did not set an alarm so we were a few minutes late to see the sunrise over the mountains. It was another chilly but sunny morning as we left the winery and headed into Bellen for breakfast at Penny's Diner. We enjoyed a huge skillet breakfast with a huge pancake and savored our coffee as it was not going to get above freezing until after 10 am. The waitress recommended the museum but it was closed today so we headed south and stopped by Bernardo Wildlife Management Area. We walked the circle car tour route and saw greater sandhill cranes and snow geese. We walked the short trails to duck blinds. The pond was frozen and they have a canal system to pump the water 30 miles from the Rio Grande River for irrigation. They plant corn specifically for the birds to feed on. We then drove further south to Servillio Preserve hiked the wildflower and nature trail and toured the cactus garden. We finished the day tasting red wines at Black's Smugglers Winery. We watched the sunset while we finished our complimentary cheese and crackers. The winery was closed except for us being the only Harvest Host guest.
