Sante Fe Skies RV Resort, Sante Fe, New Mexico

We got an early start as we headed out on the interstate on the parallel route to Route 66 with our first cup of coffee as our route bypassed Amarillo and there were not any good breakfast stops. We got off the interstate at Vega at Lucy's Kitchen for an authentic Mexican burrito breakfast. The other folks sitting next to us surprised us by buying our breakfast.  It was a shorter trip today and we lost an hour arriving in Santa Fe around 1 pm. We are impressed with Sante Fe Skies Resort Campground with their spacious sites with concrete patios and wrought iron tables at each site. We have three nights here to enjoy the sights of Santa Fe. We set up camp taking a nice long shower and then headed to the Railroad Yard to Second Street Brewery. We had a beer and noticed Tomasita's Restaurant which is was a long term authentic Mexican place so move there for a late lunch. We had the best chili rellenos dinners that came with sopapillas for dessert. Yummy! We stopped at the REI Store at the Railyard and found Glenn a insulated ball cap with ear flaps and cozy camper Acorn slippers for Glenn and North Face puffy slippers for Dorothy.

On Wednesday morning, we made coffee and headed to Randall Davey Audubon Center to get there by 8 am to see the early birds. It was a beautiful refugee with bird feeders, pollinator gardens and a path to Bear Canyon. The gift shop was open so we got Glenn a Audubon ball cap. There was snow on the ground and it was a chilly 28 degrees. We had our long underwear, sock liners, down jackets and my ice fishing fingerless mittens to keep warm. The Audubon volunteer steered is to the Plaza Cafe in historic downtown for a late breakfast of a chili relleno omelet with Christmas red and green chilis. We then walked to the New Mexico Art Museum for a wonderful mix of art. We then headed to the New Mexico History Museum that was amazing. It had a beautifully done timeline of the history with their exhibits. We continued next door to the Governor's Palace which has been restored with more exhibits and decorated for Christmas. We finished the day stopped at Saint Frances Inn and the Gruet tasting room for a flight of their autumn sparkling white wines and their still red wines. Our last stop was at Trader Joe's for wine and dinner for the next two nights so we can enjoy our cozy spot.

On Thursday morning, we cooked oatmeal and donned our long underwear and hiking boots and headed out to Hyde Memorial State Park where we had to cancel reservations last year due to snow. The roads had been sanded and there was snow piled up on the side of the winding road up to the top to the Santa Fe Ski Resort. The RV campground was right along the road and the tent campground was closed. We parked up at the Ski Resort and had a cup of coffee at the lodge and watched the skiers and snowboarders head up the two lifts and down the two trails. The slopes were icy but it was a beautiful sunny day and felt warm and everyone looked like they were having a fantastic day. We headed back down to Museum Hill in Santa Fe to visit the Museum of International Folk Art and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture both located off the same plaza. Both museums were amazing and well worth the visit. The Indian Arts had videos by the variety of artists demonstrating their trade. Then we headed to Canyon Road which is loaded with art galleries and stopped at one with a wine garden in the back. We enjoyed goat cheese and black pepper crackers and with glasses of red wine on the back patio. We got back to the campground in time to enjoy another glass of wine on our sunny patio and then wander the trail around the RV park to look at all the sculpture art and display of old farm machinery. At sundown, we took a shower at the bath house and moved our happy hour into the laundry room finishing up back at the RV with a dinner of pork pot stickers.
