Banning State Park near Sandstone, Minnesota

An early departure took us to Rosie's Restaurant in La Crosse, Wisconsin for home made corned beef hash along with scrambled eggs and toast. We continued driving along the Great River Road headed toward Sandstone, Minnesota and Banning State Park. The rain clouds let loose as we were putting up the screened in porch. We had been warned of the mosquitoes so we changed into long pants, socks, mud boots, long sleeved shirts and our bug out screen hats. The mosquitoes swarmed as we sought refuge in the tent. We headed into Sandstone and used the internet at the library. Next morning we had breakfast of french toast at Amy's Country Cafe before we headed to find the trailhead for Big Spring Fall. There were no signs as the dirt road ended but we found our way along Kettle River to the falls and followed a loop back to the car. We stopped by Robinson Park on the way looking for the beginning of the trail. Back at the campsite we packed a lunch and headed to Wolf Creek Falls and then took the historic Quarry Loop Trail with a self-guided tour of the old buildings left at the quarry. We took the steep trail to Hell's Gate rapids and back through the trail detour through the mud to the campground for close to 8 miles trek.
