Island Lake Camp Ground in Hiawatha National Forest, Munising, Michigan

After hiking two days in Agawa Bay and stopping again at Voyageur Cook House for breakfast and apple fritters, we headed to the Canadian  Border stopping in Sault Ste. Marie at the Locks Visitor center on the Canadian side. We watched pleasure vessels come through the canal and took the pedestrian bridge across and hiked the nature trails around the islands and to the rapids. We strolled along the Lake Front Trail stopping at the Art Gallery to see the Group of Seven paintings. We had to stop at Beaver Tails for a classic pastry along with a strawberry lemonade. We then crossed the multiple bridges back to the US and stopped in Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan at the historical society museum and viewed the Soo Locks and visitor center.  We camped for two nights in Hiawatha National Forest and stopped at the Bagel Furnace for breakfast in Munising before finding our way to the Miner's Castle overlook at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park. Rain and thunder started as we hiked to Miners Beach but we had a great view of the pictured rocks. We then drove through the park stopping at Hurricane River campground trail head to hike to the Au Sable Light Station. Here we encountered the infamous black biting flies but we were covered up and had our umbrellas to swat them. We took the tour of the lighthouse and climbed to the top for a great view of the Grand Sable Dunes. Our trip out of the park led us to the quaint town of Grand Marais, Michigan just as scenic as it's Canadian counterpart. The Superior Brewing Company and Saloon caught our eye for a couple craft brews with a homemade pizza. Back to the campground where we thankfully had no black flies where we napped before packing up camp to get an early start along the Michigan Upper Peninsula, the UP.
