Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

We ate our blueberries and oatmeal for breakfast to get an early start on our hike along Lake Superior. We first hiked to the second Cascade River Falls and followed the trail from the camp ground down to Lake Superior. We hiked along the peaceful water and past one back packing campsite before we crossed Highway 61 and along the high lands back to the camp site. We drove north past Grand Morais to Naniboujou Lodge Restaurant for lunch. This spectacular historic site was decorated with bold Indian designs inside. The hiker's lunch selection of creamy basil spinach soup along with a turkey swiss sandwich on orange raisin bread was yummy. We could not resist the desserts of a rum chocolate sundae and a peach cobbler with cinnamon ice cream.  We crossed the border into Ontario, Canada easily and stopped at the visitor center and walked the boardwalk to the falls. We drove through the town of Thunder Bay and on to the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park on a peninsula. The park is huge with private wooded sites. We set up the screened in porch as the mosquitoes were out in force. After a dinner of munchies we headed down to the lake front and could see the sleeping giant. The wind was whipping in the tree tops and waves were ripping across. It rained overnight. We got up and drove back to Thunder Bay and stopped at Hoiko's Finnish restaurant for breakfast of crepe like pancakes. Fort Williams Historic Park is our destination a day to experience a fur trading post with folks in period dress showing tin making, barrel making, baking, sheep sheering and a reenactment of a battle. On the way back we drove the gravel road to the Thunder Bay Lookout for an amazing view from high up. The next day we hiked 14 miles taking the trail to Middebrun Bay and Finlay Bay on Lake Superior and then South Kabeyun Trail to Tea Harbour. After an exhilarating day, we made a chicken curry stew and packed up camp so we could leave early in the morning.
